Upcoming schedule, homework

Today we will be finishing part 2 of the midterm exam, in the Tyler conference room. Please be on time!

Because the midterm took a little longer than expected, we will be meeting at Tyler again next Tuesday to collect sketchbooks, finish Urbanized, and critique the homework.

Homework:
Begin your 2nd sketchbook. Be sure to put your name and contact info inside.
Sit in a public space and make 6 full page drawings (brush pen or china pencil) of the action going on around you. From LIFE! Not photos! They can be candid portraits of people, gestures of people walking or sitting, signage, atmosphere, etc. Focus on gesture, proportion and loose mark making rather than detail.

This will prepare you for our experience next Thursday at Reading Terminal Market and Chinatown. Both are very busy places with constantly moving surroundings.

Spring Break!!!

Complete at least 5 of these drawing prompts during class, and use the remainder as prompts to fill your sketchbook over Spring Break. 

Be mindful of the page and always consider your composition before beginning a drawing. 

1. Complete a greyscale in pencil that is 9” long with 9 tones (each tone being a 1” x 2” rectangle), the rectangles on each end should be extremes (lightest possible grey, and darkest possible grey) the rectangle in the middle should be 50% grey, and every other rectangle should fall in line to form a gradual shift in tone. 
2. Complete prompt #1 using line with the brush pen or the micron pens.
3. Complete prompt #1 with China pencil
4. Self portrait in the mirror with directional line (pencil or brush pen)
5. Self portrait in the mirror with tone (pencil)
6. Set up a still life and draw it from 3 different angles
7. Set up a still life and draw it with 3 different types of lighting
8. Complete a collaborative drawing with someone, taking turns responding to each other’s contributions. 
9. Draw a foreign landscape from Google Earth
10. Draw a landscape involving extreme repetition
11.  Draw the same landscape in different types of perspective: Linear perspective, isometric (or axonometric) perspective, aerial perspective
12. Do multiple master studies based on the pen and ink, charcoal, and pencil drawings of Da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Courbet, Durer, Van Gogh, Matisse and Rembrandt.
13. Make a drawing that contrasts straight lines using a ruler with very gestural mark making. 
14. Pause a movie or TV show and draw from the screen. 
15. Glue some ephemera from your Philly travels in to your sketchbook in an interesting way. 
16. Draw quick (2 minute) full body gestures of people in class, or people in a public place. Try to capture the movement and pose of the figure with loose, gestural marks. 
17. Draw a still life over the course of 2 hours. Set a timer. Draw the same still life in 2 minutes. Set a timer. 

MIDTERM REVIEW

On Thursday we will be meeting in our classroom at Tyler at 12:30. We will be working in class and meeting individually to go over assignments and prepare for the midterm review (Tuesday March 10, the first class after returning from Spring Break).

For the midterm review:
- Approx. 1 sketchbook full of drawings in various mediums. 
- Go back through previous assignments and make sure they are the best that they can be (do not edit blind contours- those should stay as-is). Have fun with it! Make your sketchbook stand out. Please leave drawings in black and white unless color is necessary for conceptual reasons. 
- You should have the following assignments, in addition to studies completed on your own, from observation:
